Amtrak Office of Inspector General - 2017 Report - Challenges at Amtrak

The Amtrak Office of Inspector General publicly released last Friday that may be of interest. The report highlights our assessment of Amtrak's top management and performance challenges.  The challenges -- 8 in total -- mirror the areas cited in the past 2 years -- Governance, Financial Excellence, Asset Management, Acquisition and Procurement, Safety and Security, Human Resource Issues, Customer Service, and Information Technology.  Amtrak has made progress in each of the areas -- for example, beginning to replace the aging Acela equipment in the NEC, and investing in training to develop better business acumen across management ranks --but noted there's still a lot of work to be done.  Standing in the way of progress are three factors -- workforce culture, not adhering to a business strategy, and failing to hold managers (all employees, for that matter) accountable. The report’s Table of Contents provides a quick roadmap to the sections and the message in each.
